Description

Smithfield Bottle Kiln Earrings

Possibly one of the most recognisable buildings in Stoke-on-Trent, the colourful Smithfield building most certainly stands out on your drive through Stoke-on-Trent’s city centre, Hanley.

Situated right next to the old Smithfield works, the building features geometric shapes on the windows in cream, green, yellow, red and blue with thick black lines.

These Smithfield bottle kiln earrings are laser cut from wood and have been hand painted to represent the geometric shapes and the bright, bold colours of the Smithfield building.

A version of the bottle kiln earrings were also seen being worn by a Wedgwood Judge during the semi-final of Channel 4 Love Productions Great Pottery Throw Down!

Bottle Kilns have become one of my bestsellers and it is what I’m known for! You can find more designs and more jewellery and accessories with a Stoke-on-Trent theme, here.

As they’re made from high quality wood, the Smithfield bottle kiln earrings are lightweight and therefore easy to wear.

The pieces are hand painted on both sides and then coated in a protective layer of resin which provides that gorgeous clear sheen too.

Although made from amazing quality wood, these earrings are exceptionally lightweight and dainty giving you a bold statement earring that is nice and easy to wear.

About the Kilns

There was once approximately 2000 bottle kilns in Stoke-on-Trent. Now only 47 remain.

The one featured in the photos is the kiln of the old Smithfield works which was revamped in 2022 to be used as corporate offices.

All of my wonderful Ancestors worked within the pottery industry and my grand-father was a Cod Placer. This meant he was in charge of filling the bottle kilns up with the pottery ready to be fired.

As they were paid for each piece they made successfully, my Grand-father had to make sure each one was placed correctly to ensure it fired correctly.

My Grand-father passed away when I was very young. I would have loved to have spoken to him about his time as a Cod Placer.
