Description

Spitfire Earrings

Yes, these are the cutest little earrings you ever did see!

I drew these spitfire earrings digitally initially then had them laser cut on high quality wood. I have then hand painted them to represent the gorgeous colours and patterns of the world famous Supermarine Spitfire.

The wooden earrings are hand painted each side, they are then coated in a layer of resin to protect them and to create the shine.

They are a gorgeous army green in colour with a dark grey pattern and black, yellow, white and silver details plus of course the signature targets.

As each spitfire is super, duper tiny, the size of the paint brush I used to paint each one is even smaller. I will therefore try to make each one as similar as possible but there may be some slight imperfections that doesn’t affect their wearability.

You can as always, choose your findings for each piece from different colours to hypoallergenic surgical steel to sterling silver.

Why Spitfires?

The Supermarine Spitfire is an aircraft that was used by the Royal Air Force before, during and after WW2.

Innovative for its unique wings and its ability to perform at high speed (250mph), the Supermarine Spitfire is extremely popular with enthusiasts around the world.

So what do they have to do with Stoke-on-Trent?

Well, the man behind the innovative design was from Staffordshire! Reginald Joseph Mitchell was born in Butt Lane in Kidsgrove and went to Hanley High School.

Having a gift in mathematics and engineering, he joined the Supermarine Aviation Works in 1917 and within 3 years, he became the Chief Engineer.

In 1931 the Air Ministry asked for a new fighter aircraft and R.J. Mitchell’s Type 300 design was sent in. This then became to be known as the spitfire.

The photographs of the earrings were taken at the Spitfire Gallery at The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent,
